Educational attainment is measured in all main analyses as the
number of years of schooling completed (EduYears, n=293,723,
mean=14.3, s.d.=3.6; Supplementary Information sections 1.1–1.2).
Overall, educational attainment is estimated to have a heritability of around 20%2. This means that in a population of individuals with varying years of education, 20% of that variation can be explained by variants in the individuals' genomes.
Genome-wide association study identifies 74 loci associated with educational attainment, supplementary information, p. 423.2.3 Results
In Fig. 2 in the main text, we report the estimates of genetic overlap from the LD Score
regression, along with 95% confidence intervals. In Supplementary Table 3.1, we report
estimation results from both methods described above. Cognitive performance shows the
strongest genetic overlap with EduYears (r = 0.82 & rLD = 0.75). We also find substantial
genetic overlap for mental health phenotypes, in particular for neuroticism (-0.37 & -0.41),
Alzheimer’s disease (-0.20 & -0.31), and bipolar disorder (0.25 & 0.28). The positive genetic
overlap between EduYears and bipolar disorder is noteworthy given that the phenotypic
correlation is negative19,20.

Benyamin, B. et al, 2013Abstract
Intelligence in childhood, as measured by psychometric cognitive tests, is a strong predictor of many important life outcomes, including educational attainment, income, health and lifespan. Results from twin, family and adoption studies are consistent with general intelligence being highly heritable and genetically stable throughout the life course.

In the study reported here, our phenotype of interest is cognitive performance, for which we use Spearman’s measure of general cognitive ability (usually abbreviated as g; it is the general factor measured by a battery of diverse cognitive tests) (4). Our proxy phenotype is educational attainment measured by self-reported years of schooling.

iqtest.dkWelcome to IQtest.dk
This test is developed with the aim of measuring your Intelligence Quotient (IQ). The test is Culture Fair, i.e. it minimises the effect of cultural variables, such as language, mathematics, etc. The test is based on logic, but is furthermore designed to test learning capability, memory, innovative thinking and the ability to simultaneously address several problems.
The test measures the general intelligence - g.
The calculation of IQ is based on answers from more than 250,000 people.
SAT)
Cognitive performance shows the
strongest genetic overlap with EduYears (r = 0.82 & rLD = 0.75).

The predictive validity of g is most conspicuous in the domain of scholastic performance. This is apparently because g is closely linked to the ability to learn novel material and understand concepts and meanings.[56]
In elementary school, the correlation between IQ and grades and achievement scores is between .60 and .70. At more advanced educational levels, more students from the lower end of the IQ distribution drop out, which restricts the range of IQs and results in lower validity coefficients. In high school, college, and graduate school the validity coefficients are .50–.60, .40–.50, and .30–.40, respectively. The g loadings of IQ scores are high, but it is possible that some of the validity of IQ in predicting scholastic achievement is attributable to factors measured by IQ independent of g. According to research by Robert L. Thorndike, 80 to 90 percent of the predictable variance in scholastic performance is due to g, with the rest attributed to non-g factors measured by IQ and other tests.[60]
Achievement test scores are more highly correlated with IQ than school grades. This may be because grades are more influenced by the teacher's idiosyncratic perceptions of the student.[61] In a longitudinal English study, g scores measured at age 11 correlated with all the 25 subject tests of the national GCSE examination taken at age 16. The correlations ranged from .77 for the mathematics test to .42 for the art test. The correlation between g and a general educational factor computed from the GCSE tests was .81.[62]
Research suggests that the SAT, widely used in college admissions, is primarily a measure of g. A correlation of .82 has been found between g scores computed from an IQ test battery and SAT scores. In a study of 165,000 students at 41 U.S. colleges, SAT scores were found to be correlated at .47 with first-year college grade-point average after correcting for range restriction in SAT scores (the correlation rises to .55 when course difficulty is held constant, i.e., if all students attended the same set of classes).[58][63]
The Genetics of Success: How Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated With Educational Attainment Relate to Life-Course Development,
Children with higher polygenic scores had stronger
noncognitive skills.
In addition to cognitive abilities, so-
called noncognitive skills influence individuals’ attainments
(Heckman, 2006). Genetic associations were tested for two
noncognitive skills, self-control and interpersonal skill.
As described previously (Moffitt et al., 2011), dossiers
of children’s self-control skills were compiled from obser-
vational ratings and from parent and teacher reports
when the children were between ages 3 and 11 years old,
and from self-reports when the children were 11 years
old. Children with higher polygenic scores tended to
show better self-control skills across their first decade of
life (r = .10, p = .001).
Children’s interpersonal skill was measured from
reports by trained research staff on behavioral observa-
tions of the Dunedin Study members at ages 3, 5, 7, and
9 years. At each age, children were given binary ratings if
they impressed the staff as being friendly, confident,
cooperative, or communicative. These ratings were used
to form an interpersonal skill scale (see the Supplemental
Material). Children with higher polygenic scores were
rated as having better interpersonal skill (r = .10, p = .004).

Genome-wide association study identifies 74 loci associated with educational attainment, supplementary information, p. 42Furthermore, we see substantial positive genetic overlap for intracranial volume (0.39 &
0.34) and height (0.16 & 0.13), as well as a strong negative overlap for BMI (-0.44 & -0.26).
The take home message is that each imputed genotype has some likelihood to be incorrect. As we saw in the example above, common words are easy to impute while rare words are harder. This is also true with genetic variants: common variations that appear in a frequency of >5% of the population are usually more accurate than very rare variation. Thus, using imputed data to check if you are a carrier for a rare genetic disorder (e.g. Joubert Syndrome) is a bad idea. Another complication is that imputation show variable success rates for different populations. You can think about imputing human genomes as imputing different languages. Our imputation algorithm knows a large number of "languages". However, certain populations have more "dialects" (genetic variations) than others. For example, we expect to do a better job on genomes of European and East Asians than Africans because the genetic variance in Africa is the highest in all continents.
Any reported value should never be taken as-is without further careful analysis.
