AbstractMost recent synthetic studies of the Early Trans-Caucasian (ETC) Culture have omitted inclusion of evidence from Iran, concentrating instead on the Trans-Caucasus and Eastern Turkey. Recent publication of Godin Tepe level IV and ETC stratigraphy and architecture at Yanik Tepe permit a wider assessment. Brief reports of new work undertaken by Iranian archaeologists have extended the range of ETC settlements to the edge of the Caspian Basin. Despite chronological imprecision arising from absence of 14C dates, an overview of the Urmia Basin and Western Zagros is attempted. Current evidence suggests that the ETC arrived in the Urmia Basin fully developed and rapidly spread south. This overview addresses local and regional differences in material culture, from building traditions to ceramic styles, against the overwhelming sense of cultural conservatism. A final section is concerned with the end of the ETC and its apparent replacement by the Yayla Culture (Urmia Ware), in the Urmia Basin and portions of Eastern Anatolia.
