EXAMINING THE AENEOLITHIC PERIOD AND EARLY BRONZE AGE IN THE MONGOLIAN ALTAI REGION
Ass. Prof. Tsagaan Turbat, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Ulaanbaatar
Prof. Jan Bemmann, University of Bonn
The project set out to investigate several sites from the Bronze Age in the Mongolian Altai region. The project consisted of two stages, one in 2011, the other in 2012, with each stage involving respective excavation campaigns. During two field seasons, the archaeological team made excavations of 30 funeral features in the valley of Tsagaan Gol river, Tsengel county of the Bayan-Ulgii district, and Bulgan river valley, Bulgan county of the Khovd province.
In the valley of the Tsagaan Gol river we discovered rich and diverse monuments, funeral features, and other types of archaeological monuments, such as the rock art sites of Altan Tolgoi and Takhilgat Uzuur. Especially Copper Age/Aeneolithic period Afanasievo culture tombs were considered to be the most interesting, due to their rare status and their importance for understanding the very beginning of the Bronze Age cultural phenomena in the western part of Inner Asia. Most of the excavated tombs in the Tsagaan Gol valley were concentrated in the Tsagaan Gol area and belong to the Middle Bronze Age; these are so-called »no-artefact« tombs with square or circular enclosures with four corner stone steles. Radiocarbon dating of these tombs puts their origin to the 15th–9th centuries BCE.

During regular archaeological inspections in the Buyant valley (Hovd’s tributary, Western Mongolia) a series of «deer» stones were found. Some of these sculptures were known before, and the data are already published. However, a number of peculiar sculptures were found by the author of the article for the first time. While documenting the sculptures we faced with the problems of reliable recording of the images as well as the obelisks. The up-to-date equipment and various techniques of copying were involved in the process. In the course of research it’s important to understand the connection between the sculptures and a concrete archaeological complex. In this case the excavation of untouched barrows could become representative. However such cases are not known. The Buyant Russian-Mongolian expedition started the research of khereksur in the site Ulaan hudag-I, but the work has not been completed yet. The «deer» stone found near the fence differs from the majority of similar sculptures due to the lack of the arms items. Several «deer» stones were found on the embankment of one of the large khereksur in the natural boundary Bayan bulag. The traces of red paint used for filling the beaten-out images are visible on two of them. The article presents the summary of other findings and the results obtained.
