Viking Age Merchant (lived between 900 CE and 1050 CE) VK474 was interred in the Kopparsvik cemetery, located just south of the modern Visby harbor on the western coast of Gotland, Sweden. Gotland, the largest island in Sweden, is situated off the southeastern coast of the Scandinavian peninsula in the Baltic Sea. Its extensive coastline, stretching around 500 miles, made it a crucial hub for commerce and trade during the Viking Age and the Medieval Period.
Excavations at Kopparsvik began in 1917 and continued until 1966, uncovering a total of 330 graves from the period between 900 and 1050 CE. Despite the significant number of burials, no permanent settlements have been identified nearby, and soil studies suggest the area was not suitable for farming. The finds at the site, including silver and gold jewelry and coins, indicate that Kopparsvik was likely a commercial center where traders and merchants, like VK474, might have traveled and eventually died far from their homes.
DNA analysis confirmed that VK474 was genetically male. The wealth of artifacts and the nature of the site support the theory that Kopparsvik served as a trading post rather than a residential area, with many individuals buried there being merchants or visitors involved in the vibrant trade network of the Viking Age.
