Abstract
Background
Themodern humancolonization of Eurasia and Australiaismostly explainedby asingle-out-of-Africa exitfollowing a southern coastalroute throughout Arabia and India. However, dispersal across theLevantwouldbetterexplainthe introgression with Neanderthals, andmore than oneexitwould fit better with thedifferent ancient genomiccomponentsdiscov-ered inindigenous Australiansand inancient Europeans. The existence of anadditionalNorthern route used bymodern humans to reach Australia waspreviously deducedfromthephylogeography of mtDNA macrohaplogroup N. Here, we presentnew mtDNA data andnew multidisciplinaryinformation that add more support to thisnorthernroute.
Methods
MtDNA hypervariable segments and haplogroupdiagnostic codingpositionswereanalyzedin2,278 Saudi Arabs, from which 1,725 are new samples.Besides, we used623 publishedmtDNA genomesbelonging tomacrohaplogroupN, butnotR, tobuild updatedphylogenetictrees tocalculate their coalescence ages, andmore than 70,000partial mtDNA sequenceswere screened to establishtheir respective geographicranges
Results
TheSaudimtDNA profileconfirms theabsenceof autochthonous mtDNA lineages inArabiawith coalescence ages deep enoughto supportpopulation continuity in theregion sincetheout-of-Africa episode. In contrast to Australia, where N(xR) haplogroups are foundinhighfrequencyand with deepcoalescence ages, there are not autochthonousN(xR) lineages inIndia nor N(xR) branches with coalescence ages asdeep asthose foundin Australia. These patternsare at odds with thesupposition that Australiancolonizers harboringN(xR).

Climatic marine isotope stages(MIS) and most probable places of genetic admixture with Neanderthals and Denisovans are depicted. Dotted lines in B mean probable gene flow between populations from different dispersals

Conclusions
An unique southern route for the AMH out of Africa migrations has been placed as the most probable path for the journey that drove our species to colonize the entire world. However, as this study demonstrates, an additional Levant northern route is more congruent with available multidisciplinary data. In addition, combined genetic, archaeological and bioclimatic evidence suggest that, although the early anatomically modern human was born in Africa, the nursery of the modern humans that colonized Eurasia, Oceania and the New World might be first at the south Siberia northwest China core and later in Southeast Asia.

Да, Northern Asian Route
