"Thank you for your response. I apologize for this unfortunate situation and understand how frustrating it must be. The Family Finder test requires a high quality of sample. If the sample does not meet this quality level, it will not provide accurate results and are therefore forced to re-run the test.
98.5% of samples we process pass on the first run; only 1.5% or fewer fail. The majority of tests that do not pass on the first attempt
will pass on the second (96%); however,
in rare cases where both samples fail, we require additional samples and payment to continue.
I'm sorry the test failed twice. Unfortunately, while we do not charge a lab processing fee for the second attempt after samples fail once, if the second attempt also fails, we do require payment, as the cost of running the test twice exceeds the price the consumer pays for the test initially. Since so few samples fail once, we extend the courtesy of the free rerun to everyone in that scenario.
When samples to continue to fail, the most common reason is due to failure to follow the swabbing instructions closely. In this instance, disregard for the importance of following those instructions closely can risk certain certifications our lab holds by increasing the percentage of samples that continue to fail. In this scenario, the lab declines to continue offering free reruns.
The testing process for the Family Finder limits us to two attempts without collecting additional payment to cover the lab cost. I have included a link to our Terms of Purchases which states these requirements to continue the Family Finder test. Unfortunately, kit IN72717 has experienced two sample failures and will require additional samples and a payment of $50 to continue testing. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience this caused.
We, unfortunately, cannot determine what will cause each individual sample to fail quality control, as it can be a number of options. Typically the most common causes are either not enough cells were collected on the sample swabs through inadequate swabbing techniques or there was some sort of contamination at the time of collection.
Samples should be collected at least one hour after brushing teeth, using mouthwash, drinking or eating anything, etc as this will cause not as many cheek cells to be collected on the swabs. If it is not done at least one hour after consuming anything, food and sugary drinks could contaminate a sample and encourage bacterial or fungal growth, which would negatively affect a sample.
Furthermore, if you wear dentures or partials, certain creams and glues have been known to contaminate and degrade the samples, and samples should always be taken prior to using any of these products to ensure quality.
Certain medications and procedures used to treat cancer have also been known to disrupt the structure of DNA and can also lead to sample failures. If the DNA donor is currently in treatment for cancer, has had extensive procedures for cancer, or a bone marrow transplant in the past please let me know as certain situations may cause samples to continue to fail, and in those situations, we would not recommend to move forward with a retest.
Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
