My question is more about the fragment going from Kiev to the East. It avoids Moscow, so it means for me that this way is from pre-Moscovitan time. I think also that it goes along the Northern border of steps - between steps and the step-forest areas.
The interpretation of this strip could be perhaps “productive” for the studies of tribal times, maybe in the context of Erya’s who are of your great interest.
Another possibility is that this was a dry way from Kiev and Chernigov to Bolghar (the capital of the Volga-Bulgar state) in Varangian times.
