Some individuals from CWC contexts, including the two from Obłaczkowo, cluster closely with the potential source population of steppe-related ancestry, the Yamnaya herders. Notably, these individuals appear to be those with the earliest radiocarbon dates among all genetically investigated individuals from CWC contexts. Overall, for CWC-associated individuals, there is a clear trend of decreasing affinity to Yamnaya herders with time

By contrast, the CWC individuals from Obłaczkowo in Poland (poz44 and poz81) show an extremely high proportion of steppe ancestry (greater than 90%), which is different from the later CWC-associated individuals excavated in Pikutkowo (Poland) [23], but similar to some other CWC-associated individuals from Germany, Lithuania, and Latvia [2,8,31]. Interestingly, these individuals with a large fraction of steppe ancestry have typically been dated to more than 2600 BCE, making them among the earliest CWC individuals genetically investigated. This observation, i.e. early CWC individuals resembled (genetically) Yamnaya-associated individuals, while later CWC groups show higher levels of European Neolithic farmer ancestry (Pearson's correlation coefficient: −0.51, p = 0.006) (figure 2), suggests an initial dispersal that occurred rapidly.

Kunila 2 (2626-2390 calBCE).

Oldest ancient I-DF29 (and full I1) to date discovered!

Recent paper from Malmström et al was published earlier this month on "The genomic ancestry of the Scandinavian Battle Axe Culture people and their relation to the broader Corded Ware horizon” in Proc. R. Soc.B – paper is open access so you should all be able to read it if interested. In the Supplementary Material (always where some of the good stuff can be found), one of the samples – oll009 “a Scandinavian Late Neolithic male from a megalithic tomb, may belong to hg I1-M253.” They don’t confidently assign a Y-DNA haplogroup in the paper because they use Phylotree as a reference which only lists three SNPs at the I1 level – out of these three, the only positive SNP was M253 with a single T read and the authors (quite rightly) didn’t think that was enough concrete evidence to assign Y-DNA haplogroup I1. The authors made the BAM files available for the samples in the paper, so I downloaded oll009’s BAM file and took a look using the YFull tree as reference, which has 312 phyloequivalent SNPs at the I1 level. Oll0009’s sequenced genome has reasonable coverage and I was able to find that oll009 is derived (positive) for for 130 of the I1 SNPs, including several that have multiple reads - for example Z2816/CTS8170 has 5 derived T reads. There were also 14 of the I1-level SNPs that I tagged as ambiguous - some of these probably derived such as Y1870/FGC2460 4C 1T. There are also seven SNPs that are ancestral/negative - although most of them are one-read and probably false negatives. Even more interesting, oll009 is positive for two of the SNPs at the I-DF29 branch - no call for DF29 itself, but positive for Z2891/V1614 with 2T reads and Z2892/CTS9848 with 4G reads, which would confirm full I1 for oll009. an interesting one because it's the oldest fully I1 that we have to date - dated to 1930-1750 BCE (95.4%) by radiocarbon analysis and thus belongs to the Scandinavian Late Neolithic.

Not directly related to I-P109 as a subclade - oll009 is negative for Y2592 and Y2593 higher up the tree. But it is the oldest confrimed fully I1 sample that we have to date, so thought some of you might be interested.
